The Art Gallery of NSW is cutting 12.5% of its staff to save $7.5 million amid a funding shortfall, with most reductions affecting middle-ranking and frontline roles while executive positions and revenue-generating departments are protected.
Director Maud Page defended the changes as necessary for long-term sustainability, noting her leadership team is now the smallest among state cultural institutions.
The cuts follow broader government reductions at Create NSW and come despite the gallery’s $344 million expansion drawing over 2.3 million visitors in 2024.
The move sparked criticism from the Public Service Association, which warned curatorial cuts could harm collection management and international exhibitions.
Meanwhile, the gallery announced a major new exhibition by sculptor Ron Mueck featuring his immersive work Havoc 2025.
