Abu Dhabi doubled its protected lands to 20% in 2025, adding 4,581 sq km across 26 reserves for biodiversity.
In October 2025, Abu Dhabi expanded its protected natural areas to cover 20% of the emirate’s land, adding 4,581 square kilometers and bringing the total to 26 protected areas across 22,821 square kilometers.
The initiative, led by President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, includes new terrestrial and marine reserves such as Al Wathba Fossil Dunes, Liwa Groundwater Reservoir, Ghaf Natural Reserve, Abu Al Abyad, and expanded areas like Qasr Al Sarab and Ras Ghanada.
Managed by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, the move supports the UAE’s National Biodiversity Strategy 2031 and global 30x30 conservation goals, aligning with the IUCN World Conservation Congress hosted in Abu Dhabi.
