A 90-year-old Portuguese Canadian community leader and co-founder of a social club has died after battling cancer.
Antonio do Forno, a 90-year-old co-founder of the Portuguese Canadian Social Club in Chatham and a dedicated advocate for Portuguese immigrants in Canada, has died after a cancer battle.
Born in Portugal during the Salazar dictatorship, he immigrated in 1966 and spent decades supporting newcomers by housing them, serving as a consulate liaison, and helping establish Portuguese language programs in Chatham, Wheatley, and Leamington.
A notary public and businessman, he founded a food store and travel agency that served the community for decades.
He represented Portuguese Canadians nationally and internationally, including at a 1984 state dinner with Prime Minister Trudeau and Portuguese President Eanes, and received honors such as honorary consul for Portugal in Canada and the medal of merit.
A man of deep faith and integrity, he remained active in the social club he co-founded until recently.
