A 6-year-old autistic, nonverbal boy in Sumter County, South Carolina, is recovering after accidentally shooting himself in the face with a .45-caliber handgun at his home on October 13, 2025.
The incident occurred in the master bedroom where the gun was stored on a dresser, reportedly for safety reasons.
The child accessed the weapon while playing, and his mother heard a gunshot and immediately drove him to a hospital, stopping at a gas station to request an ambulance.
He was treated at Prisma Health Tuomey and later transferred to Prisma Health Richland.
Authorities are investigating how the child obtained the firearm and whether the parents could face charges related to child neglect or unlawful conduct.
The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office emphasized the importance of secure gun storage and gun locks to prevent such tragedies, noting that unsecured firearms pose a significant risk to children.
