UK passes new law to revive halted inquests, end immunity, and boost Irish cooperation on legacy issues.
The UK has introduced new legislation to replace the controversial 2023 Legacy Act, aiming to restore inquests, lift immunity for perpetrators, and establish a reformed Legacy Commission and Independent Commission on Information Retrieval.
The bill, part of a UK-Irish framework, allows nine halted inquests to resume, enables remote testimony for veterans, blocks compensation claims for figures like Gerry Adams, and enhances Irish cooperation through funding and a dedicated police unit.
The Irish government said it may reassess its international legal case against the UK if the framework is implemented.
The reforms aim to fulfill a key promise of the Good Friday Agreement and respond to victims’ demands for truth and justice.
