Temporary flood barriers successfully tested in Abingdon to protect homes, with plans for annual maintenance and calls for permanent solutions.
Temporary flood barriers have been successfully tested in Abingdon to protect homes on Chaunterell Way and Nash Drive from recurring flooding on the River Ock. The Environment Agency, which previously raised safety concerns due to waterlogged ground, now confirms the barriers can be safely deployed with pumps. It has also cleared debris and vegetation to improve river flow and storage, with plans for annual maintenance. Residents, including long-time flood victim Jim King, welcomed the move but stressed the need for a permanent fix. The area has flooded three times in 2024, fueling calls for reform in government funding for smaller flood defence projects. Barriers are stored in west Oxford and will be deployed as needed.
