A mysterious sidewalk imprint in Chicago’s Roscoe Village, once dubbed the "Rat Hole" and widely believed to be made by a large rodent, was likely created by a squirrel, according to a new study.
Researchers analyzed the mark’s shape and compared it to local rodent species, finding a 98.67% match with the eastern gray squirrel.
They concluded the animal probably fell into wet concrete while climbing a tree, leaving a near-perfect body impression.
The study, published in Biology Letters, highlights how scientific analysis can clarify viral internet mysteries.
The original slab was moved to Chicago City Hall as a local curiosity.
