South African photographer Wim van den Heever has won the 2025 Wildlife Photographer of the Year award for "Ghost Town Visitor," a haunting image of a brown hyena roaming the abandoned Namibian town of Kolmanskop.
Captured after a decade of work using camera traps, the photo highlights nature’s reclamation of human spaces and was chosen from over 60,000 entries.
The award, hosted by the Natural History Museum in London, also recognized impactful conservation stories, including a Brazilian photo of an orphaned anteater and a Spanish series on rattlesnake round-ups.
