The Seneca Chief replica completed its 33-day journey to Schenectady, marking the Erie Canal’s 200th anniversary.
The replica canal boat Seneca Chief arrived in Schenectady on October 14, 2025, concluding its 33-day journey to mark the 200th anniversary of the Erie Canal’s opening.
Built by over 200 volunteers using traditional methods and materials, the vessel honors the canal’s role in transforming New York’s economy by drastically cutting travel time and freight costs.
Despite rain, dozens attended the event at Mohawk Harbor.
The journey includes stops in Waterford, Albany, and Hudson, where pine trees are being planted to honor Indigenous communities displaced by the canal.
Water collected along the route will help sustain the final tree in New York City on October 25.
