Royal Mail fined £21M for failing delivery targets for third year, ordered to improve service.
Royal Mail has been fined £21 million by UK regulator Ofcom for missing first and second class mail delivery targets in the 2024-25 financial year, the third consecutive year it has been penalized.
Only 77% of first-class mail and 92.5% of second-class mail were delivered on time, below the 93% and 98.5% targets.
Ofcom said Royal Mail failed to meet its obligations despite extreme weather, causing harm to customers who rely on timely service.
The fine, reduced from £30 million due to Royal Mail’s admission of liability, comes with a demand for a public improvement plan, warning of further penalties if performance doesn’t improve.
Royal Mail plans to shift second-class delivery to every other weekday, maintain Monday-to-Saturday first-class delivery, and hire 20,000 temporary workers for the holiday season.
