NSW bowler Sean Abbott replaced mid-match due to hand injury, first use of new injury rule.
New South Wales fast bowler Sean Abbott became the first player substituted out of a Sheffield Shield match under a new injury replacement rule, after splitting the webbing in his right hand while fielding a drive off his own bowling during a match against Victoria at Junction Oval on October 15.
The injury occurred in the 43rd over, prompting immediate withdrawal and replacement by Charlie Stobo, approved by the match referee.
The rule, trialled in the first five rounds of the 2025-26 season for non-concussion injuries, also allows Victoria a tactical bowler substitution before stumps on day two.
Abbott’s absence raises concerns over his availability for Australia’s Ashes series starting November 21.
