A no-confidence vote against Irish Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris over delayed child scoliosis surgeries is set for October 22, 2025.
A no-confidence motion against Ireland’s Tanaiste Simon Harris is set for October 22, 2025, over his handling of children’s healthcare, particularly delays in scoliosis surgeries at Children’s Health Ireland (CHI).
The motion, brought by the party Aontu, cites a 2017 promise that no child would wait more than four months for treatment, which Aontu says was not fulfilled.
The controversy follows a series of scandals at CHI, including improper medical procedures, data breaches, and staffing issues, as well as the death of nine-year-old Harvey Morrison Sherratt, whose spinal curve worsened from 75 to 130 degrees while awaiting surgery.
His parents and Aontu leader Peadar Toibin have called for Harris’s resignation, citing systemic failures and a lack of accountability.
Harris said the government will respond swiftly, possibly with a counter-motion as early as October 14, and denied needing extra time for his presidential campaign, affirming his full focus on his duties.
The vote comes just two days before Ireland’s presidential election.
