New Zealand's first Synergizer calves, a crossbreed for better beef and sustainability, have been born, with wider availability expected by 2027.
The first Synergizer calves, a new dairy-beef crossbreed developed by Pāmu and LIC in New Zealand, have been born near Taupō, combining Nebraskan Stabilizer and French Charolais genetics.
Designed for shorter gestation, easier calving, strong growth, and high meat quality, the breed aims to boost sustainability and profitability across the dairy-beef supply chain.
Around 350 first-cross calves were born this year, with limited frozen semen available from spring 2026 and broader access expected by 2027.
The project is backed by research and progeny testing, supported by a Rabobank report estimating the annual value of New Zealand’s dairy-beef sector exceeds $1.2 billion.
