Top-seeded Naomi Osaka advanced to the Japan Open quarterfinals, overcoming a left leg injury and emotional distress to defeat defending champion Suzan Lamens 7-6 (8/6), 3-6, 6-2 in a two-hour, 20-minute match.
Playing her first singles tournament in Japan in three years, Osaka sought medical treatment during the third set and returned with heavy strapping on her thigh, later admitting she took painkillers and fought back tears after winning.
The 27-year-old, ranked 16th, will face Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian next.
The victory marks her return to the second week of a major after a long drought, following a recent US Open semi-final appearance.
