Maryland’s top IID leaders resigned after a high-speed chase case involving officer misconduct was dismissed.
Two top leaders of Maryland’s Independent Investigations Division, Chief Allison Green and Deputy Chief Renee Joy, have resigned amid scrutiny following the dismissal of the unit’s first officer indictment in a high-speed chase that killed 22-year-old Damione Gardner.
The case, involving officers accused of misconduct and failing to activate emergency equipment, was dismissed by a judge in Anne Arundel County.
The resignation comes weeks after the division’s newly granted prosecution authority faced its first major test.
Jonathan Smith of the Civil Rights Division will serve as interim chief while a permanent replacement is sought.
A job posting for the chief position has been published, requiring at least 10 years of prosecutorial or defense experience.
