Aren Pearson, 41, was convicted of murdering his partner, 24-year-old Canadian national Claire Leveque, in Shetland on February 11, 2024.
The High Court in Edinburgh heard that Pearson inflicted multiple stab wounds, blunt force trauma, neck compression, and submerged Leveque in a hot tub at a Sandness home, leading to her death.
After the attack, he drove his car into the sea at Melby Pier before returning to the house and being arrested.
Police described the assault as “truly horrifying” and cited a pattern of abuse.
Officials emphasized the rarity of such violence in Shetland but acknowledged the deep impact on the community and reaffirmed efforts to combat gender-based violence.
