India tells Supreme Court that over 3,600 acres of defense land are encroached, with efforts underway to reclaim it.
On October 15, 2025, India’s government told the Supreme Court that defense lands have been encroached upon by individuals, former lessees, and government bodies, with 2,024 acres occupied by people and 1,575 by former agricultural tenants.
Around 819 acres are used for public infrastructure.
A high-powered committee is working to reclaim the land, facing resistance and procedural hurdles, while digital tracking and land exchanges are being used.
Over the past decade, about 1,715 acres have been reclaimed, including 220 this year.
The court ordered an interim report within two weeks and scheduled further hearings for November 10.
