The Ghana cedi strengthened significantly in early October 2025, gaining about 5% on the interbank market, reversing earlier losses, and becoming Africa’s top-performing currency with a year-to-date rise of approximately 20%.
This rebound followed new foreign exchange measures by the Bank of Ghana, including shifting to spot forex auctions and launching a Domestic Gold Purchase Program, alongside tight fiscal policies and rising export revenues.
Despite recent pressure from increased import demand and election-related spending, the central bank plans to inject $1.15 billion into the forex market to maintain stability.
The cedi’s recovery is also linked to broader global trends, including a weaker U.S. dollar and higher commodity prices.
