Former SC Rep. RJ May would have been expelled for ethics violations and tax fraud, but resigned before action was taken.
The South Carolina House Ethics Committee said it would have unanimously expelled former Rep. RJ May if he hadn’t resigned before the investigation concluded.
The probe, launched in June after May’s arrest on child sexual abuse material charges, found he failed to file taxes for himself or his unregistered political consulting firm over three years while serving in the legislature.
The committee, which interviewed multiple lawmakers and hired outside counsel, determined his actions violated ethical standards.
Though expulsion was no longer possible after his resignation, the findings were formally documented and sent to the State Ethics Commission and other agencies.
May pleaded guilty to five federal charges and awaits sentencing.
