Florida sued for hiding $608M federal funding request for Everglades immigration center, misleading courts on project’s financial backing.
Florida officials are being sued for allegedly hiding a $608 million federal funding request for the "Alligator Alcatraz" immigration detention center in the Everglades, misleading courts and the public about the project’s financial backing.
The lawsuit, filed by Friends of the Everglades and others, claims the state failed to disclose the funding application—submitted on August 7—when arguing before a federal appellate panel that no environmental review was needed because no federal funds had been approved.
Federal officials have since confirmed the funding was approved.
The facility, built on a remote airstrip in Collier County under Governor Ron DeSantis’ administration, was ordered shut in August over environmental concerns but remained open after a stay.
The lawsuit seeks withheld records and accuses state agencies of violating transparency laws and undermining environmental protections.
