EU urges Serbia to boost reforms and align with sanctions to advance EU membership talks.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen urged Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic on October 15, 2025, to advance EU accession by implementing rule-of-law reforms, improving media freedom, and adopting EU sanctions against Russia, which Serbia has not enforced.
She emphasized that Serbia’s 61% alignment with EU foreign policy is insufficient and called for greater cooperation, while Vucic cited energy dependence on Russia and U.S. sanctions on Serbia’s state oil company as challenges.
The visit highlighted ongoing tensions over protests following the Novi Sad train station collapse and concerns over democratic backsliding, as the EU continues pushing for reforms in exchange for integration.
La UE insta a Serbia a impulsar las reformas y alinearse con las sanciones para avanzar en las negociaciones de adhesión a la UE.
