A BC man’s suicide after abrupt medication withdrawal sparks calls for transparency and higher autopsy rates in mental health-related deaths.
Wayne Heinen, friend of Rodney Wells, 61, who died by suicide in June 2025 after struggling with mental health and medication changes, is calling for transparency in British Columbia’s death investigations.
Wells, a cancer survivor, had been prescribed zopiclone for insomnia and stopped it abruptly, leading to severe rebound symptoms.
He was also on multiple medications with suicide risk warnings, including trazodone, which was not properly explained to him.
Despite family requests, the Kelowna coroner refused an autopsy, citing job risk, contributing to concerns over B.C.’s low 3.2% autopsy rate.
Heinen and others urge better oversight, especially in cases involving mental health and medication withdrawal, to prevent future tragedies.
