Arizona AG demands Speaker Johnson swear in Democrat Adelita Grijalva by Oct. 16 or face legal action.
Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes is demanding House Speaker Mike Johnson swear in Democrat Adelita Grijalva, the winner of a September special election to fill her late father’s seat, by October 16, warning of legal action if he fails to act.
Grijalva’s victory was certified, and Mayes argues the swearing-in is a ministerial duty, not subject to delay, especially since Johnson previously swore in Republican representatives during pro forma sessions.
She alleges the delay is politically motivated, possibly to avoid a vote on releasing Jeffrey Epstein-related files, and says Grijalva cannot serve her constituents without official recognition.
Johnson has not responded but claims the House must be in session to swear her in, despite the ongoing government shutdown.
