The Vatican has launched a canonical trial for former priest Marko Rupnik, accused of abuse by over two dozen women, following Pope Francis’s waiver of the statute of limitations.
The Vatican has appointed a five-member panel of independent judges, including women and priests outside the Vatican bureaucracy, to oversee the canonical trial of former Jesuit priest and artist Marko Ivan Rupnik, accused of sexual, spiritual, and psychological abuse by over two dozen women, primarily from a religious community he co-founded in Slovenia.
The trial, announced on October 13, 2025, follows Pope Francis’s 2023 decision to waive the statute of limitations after public pressure.
Rupnik was expelled by the Jesuits in 2023 for refusing to cooperate and previously faced excommunication for using the confessional to absolve a woman with whom he had a sexual relationship.
The case has drawn international scrutiny, highlighting ongoing challenges in the Church’s handling of high-profile abuse allegations.
