UAE scientists turn coffee grounds and plastic into carbon-capturing material.
Researchers in the UAE have created a low-cost, sustainable method to produce activated carbon from spent coffee grounds and PET plastic, capable of capturing CO₂ emissions.
The process, patented in March 2025 and published in August, uses potassium hydroxide and a 600°C activation temperature to transform waste into a high-performance adsorbent.
It addresses two major pollution sources—eight million tons of coffee waste and vast plastic waste—by repurposing them into a material useful for carbon capture, air and water purification, and industrial gas treatment.
The innovation supports a circular economy, reduces landfill use, and offers scalable potential for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.
