Sweden to build northern grain reserves for food security, starting Oct. 15, 2025, with $60M budget.
Sweden will create emergency grain reserves in its northern regions—Norrbotten, Vasterbotten, Vasternorrland, and Jämtland—starting October 15, with a 575 million kronor ($60 million) budget allocation for 2026.
The initiative, part of the country’s expanded total defence strategy, aims to ensure food security amid potential isolation during conflicts, as northern Sweden currently relies on grain imports from the south.
Storage is expected to begin in spring 2026, with plans to expand the system nationwide by 2028.
