Surfer Scott Muir paralyzed by Hurricane Narda wave in Oceanside, rescued by fellow surfers, now recovering in Colorado.
Scott Muir, a 41-year-old surfer from south Orange County, was paralyzed on October 13, 2025, after being struck by a massive wave generated by Hurricane Narda while surfing in Oceanside, California.
Though his spinal cord was not severed, he lost sensation in his body.
Two fellow surfers, Judah Ely and Thomas Alspaugh, rescued him by spotting his empty board, swimming to assist, and stabilizing his neck until emergency crews arrived.
Muir was airlifted to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, where he underwent surgery for fractured vertebrae.
He has since regained partial mobility, including movement in his arms and left leg, and is recovering at a rehabilitation facility in Colorado.
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help cover his medical costs, and Muir has expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of support.
