Santa Cruz, Bolivia, recycles old tires into fuel for cement kilns, cutting emissions and waste.
Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, has launched a public-private initiative with Itacamba Cemento to recycle end-of-life tires into alternative fuel for cement production.
The project, managed by municipal waste company Emacruz, collects tires from landfills and processes them for use in cement kilns operating above 1,400°C.
This co-processing method reduces fossil fuel use, lowers CO2 emissions, and prevents environmental pollution and disease-carrying insect breeding sites.
Strict monitoring ensures emissions remain below legal limits, supporting a circular economy and sustainable waste management.
