Rotorua launches Whakapiri Mahi to tackle youth unemployment with paid digital internships for ages 15–24.
Rotorua is launching Whakapiri Mahi, a programme by Native Tech and Digital Natives Academy, to combat its 17.3% youth unemployment rate—34% above the national average—by connecting young people with local employers through short shadow roles and longer internships.
The initiative, targeting those aged 15 to 24 not in education, employment, or training, offers hands-on experience in digital fields like coding and social media, with placements over one month paid at least the New Zealand minimum wage.
The programme aims to create 20 placements between November 2025 and February 2026, helping youth build confidence, gain references, and overcome the experience barrier.
Employers can register online, with support provided for matching, paperwork, and mentorship.
