The Philippines' Bureau of Customs reforms after U.S. report cites corruption, boosting digitalization and transparency.
The Bureau of Customs (BoC) in the Philippines is responding to a U.S. State Department report labeling it one of the country’s most corrupt institutions, citing bribery and corruption as barriers to foreign investment.
In response, the BoC, under new Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno, has launched sweeping reforms including a 96.99% digitalization rate, a strict "No-Take Policy," suspension of arbitrary authority letters, and stricter conflict-of-interest rules.
The agency is working with the American Chamber of Commerce and the U.S. Embassy to improve transparency, strengthen trade facilitation, and address concerns through dialogue.
These efforts align with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s broader anti-corruption campaign to professionalize government services and boost investor confidence.
