Penn State and WHYY agree to transfer WPSU to prevent closure, with WHYY securing funding and preserving local programming.
The Penn State Board of Trustees has unanimously approved a revised agreement to transfer WPSU’s operating assets to WHYY, a Philadelphia public media organization, averting the station’s planned closure by June 2026.
Under the new terms, Penn State will not provide financial support, and WHYY must secure at least $8.36 million in third-party funding within 30 days.
WHYY has committed to operating WPSU for at least three years, preserving its mission of local news and programming, and offering current employees opportunities for new roles.
The deal requires approval from WHYY’s board and the Federal Communications Commission.
