Northern Ireland’s government faces ongoing instability due to political gridlock and calls for reform ahead of 2027.
Northern Ireland’s Stormont Executive is facing renewed instability, with Agriculture and Environment Minister Andrew Muir describing governance as a “battle a day.” Despite being restored in 2020, delays in approving key policies like the environment and green growth strategies persist, partly due to the DUP’s requirement for party officer approval.
Muir cited declining cooperation between the First and deputy First Ministers and called for structural reforms, including removing vetoes on the speaker election and allowing the Executive to continue if a party withdraws.
He expressed concern over the DUP’s focus on divisive issues and the UUP’s diminished role as a moderate unionist voice, urging changes to strengthen institutions ahead of the 2027 Assembly election.
