Nigeria proposes moving 2026 elections to November 2026 to shorten dispute resolution time.
Nigeria’s National Assembly has proposed moving the 2026 presidential and gubernatorial elections to November 2026, six months earlier than usual, to allow sufficient time for resolving election disputes before the May 29, 2027, handover.
The draft Electoral Act amendment aims to streamline the process by setting a 185-day window for all election-related legal rulings, reducing tribunal timelines to 90 days, and requiring electronic transmission of results with penalties for non-compliance.
The proposal also includes early voting for certain groups, making permanent voter cards optional, and shifting election scheduling authority from the constitution to the Electoral Act.
While INEC and some stakeholders support the reforms for improving transparency and efficiency, opposition parties have raised concerns about fairness and potential political advantages for the ruling party.
The bill remains under review.
