New Zealand has chosen Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) to build two new 200-meter-long, rail-enabled ferries for the Cook Strait route, with delivery set for 2029.
The decision, confirmed by Rail Minister Winston Peters, marks a return to the original 2020 plan after canceling the costly iReX project.
The ferries will carry 1,500 passengers and both road and rail traffic, aiming to restore reliable cross-strait service.
Final contract terms, including port agreements, are still being negotiated and will be announced before year-end.
The aging Interislander ferry Aratere has been sold for recycling to make way for the new vessels.
