A Nebraska teacher was charged for pinching a non-verbal student with Down syndrome in September 2025.
Mary Yarrington, a 63-year-old former special education teacher in Loup County, Nebraska, has been charged with intentional child abuse without injury after admitting to pinching a 16-year-old non-verbal student with Down syndrome during a walk in September 2025.
School staff reported bruising and fingernail-like marks on the student’s neck, prompting an investigation.
Yarrington, who is no longer employed by the district, was released on citation and is scheduled for her first court appearance on November 26.
The student’s mother expressed disbelief, and the school district reaffirmed its commitment to student safety.
