A man was sentenced to three years in prison for abusing his niece during overnight stays in the early 1990s.
Mark O’Neill, 58, of Athlone, was sentenced to three years in prison for sexually abusing his niece, Helena Flynn, between 1991 and 1993 when she was eight to ten years old.
The abuse occurred during overnight stays at her family home, where O’Neill, her mother’s brother, slept in the same bed and subjected her to repeated assaults, including touching and attempted penetration, while threatening her with harm.
Flynn, now 42, spoke in court about decades of trauma, self-harm, suicide attempts, and family rejection after reporting the abuse in 2020.
Despite O’Neill’s denial and claims of innocence, a jury convicted him on eight counts of sexual assault.
The judge noted the abuse involved grooming, a significant age gap, and a breach of trust, with the maximum penalty at the time being five years—less than today’s 14-year maximum.
Flynn waived her anonymity, calling herself a survivor and urging other victims to speak out.
