India's Supreme Court delays ruling on challenge to law removing CJI from election commissioner appointments, set for Nov. 11.
India's Supreme Court has adjourned hearings on petitions challenging the 2023 law that removed the Chief Justice of India from the panel appointing Election Commissioners, setting the next date for November 11.
The petitions argue the change undermines the independence of the Election Commission and violates a prior court ruling requiring the CJI’s inclusion.
The new appointment process, now led by the Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition, and a nominated Cabinet Minister, has already been used to appoint two commissioners, with the court declining to halt its implementation in 2024.
The case remains unresolved.
