The Indianapolis education task force is reviewing major reforms to fix its broken school system, aiming to improve equity and efficiency by year-end.
The Indianapolis Local Education Alliance (ILEA), a state-appointed group, is evaluating reforms for the city’s fragmented public education system, including school closures, transportation, facilities, and governance.
Comprised of nine members, including the mayor and district leaders, the ILEA will recommend changes by year’s end to address inefficiencies, funding gaps, and disparities in services for students with disabilities and English language learners.
The IPS school board opposes a shift to an all-charter model, citing low proficiency rates and advocating for an elected board, a moratorium on new charters, and centralized charter oversight.
Meanwhile, third-grade literacy scores improved significantly in 2025, with gains across both district and charter schools.
The ILEA will hold additional public meetings and must deliver final recommendations to the state legislature.
