Indian tourists can soon pay in Japan using UPI via QR codes, boosting convenience and tourism.
Indian tourists visiting Japan may soon use India’s UPI for digital payments after a partnership between NPCI International Payments Limited and Japan’s NTT DATA.
The agreement, leveraging NTT DATA’s CAFIS network, will allow Indian travelers to pay via QR codes at participating merchants, improving convenience and reducing reliance on cash or foreign cards.
The move comes as Indian tourism to Japan surged 36% in the first eight months of 2025, with over 208,000 visitors.
The initiative aims to enhance cross-border payment access and support Japanese merchants by attracting more Indian tourists.
