Glasgow’s Hunterian returns ancestral remains and artifacts to South Africa for reburial.
The Hunterian in Glasgow will return six ancestral human remains, two plaster face-casts, and a smoking pipe to South Africa, following years of consultation with Indigenous communities.
The remains, taken from burial sites in the Northern and Western Cape between 1868 and 1924, are linked to San, Nama, Griqua, Korana, and Khoi San groups.
The repatriation, part of a global effort to address colonial-era injustices, aims to restore dignity, honor cultural traditions, and provide closure.
The items will be transferred to Iziko Museums of South Africa and reburied with guidance from descendant communities.
