Europe’s top human rights official urges UK to protect trans rights after Supreme Court ruling, warns against exclusion and flawed protest laws.
Europe’s top human rights watchdog, Michael O’Flaherty, has warned the UK to protect trans rights following a Supreme Court ruling defining women by biological sex.
He cautioned that unclear implementation could leave trans people in an “intermediate zone” where legal gender recognition lacks real-world effect, risking exclusion from public spaces.
O’Flaherty urged clear, rights-respecting guidance, warned against requiring public disclosure of gender identity, and criticized framing trans rights as conflicting with other groups’ rights.
He also raised concerns about protest policing after the government banned Palestine Action as a terror group, calling for a review of the Crime and Policing Bill to ensure it respects the right to peaceful assembly.
