Kieran O'Dea, a 40-year-old Dublin man with a history of cocaine addiction and prior drug offenses, was sentenced to four years and nine months in prison for possessing 24 kilograms of cannabis intended for sale, valued at €480,000.
He claimed he was coerced into traveling to Thailand to retrieve the drugs to settle an €8,000 debt, under threats made in front of his children, and believed the suitcase contained clothing.
Authorities found the drugs during a search at Dublin Airport.
O'Dea, who had been working to rehabilitate through community involvement, admitted to a relapse into cocaine use in 2024.
The judge acknowledged his efforts to overcome addiction but stressed the severity of the large-scale drug offense.
