California will become the first state to require restaurants with 20 or more locations to disclose major food allergens—such as milk, eggs, shellfish, and tree nuts—on menus or via digital options starting July 1, 2026.
The law, signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, mandates disclosure when restaurants know or should know allergens are present in dishes.
It aims to improve safety for the estimated 20 million Americans with food allergies and was championed by Sen. Caroline Menjivar and advocacy groups including Food Allergy Research and Education.
While the California Restaurant Association raised concerns about costs and legal risks, it supported excluding smaller restaurants.
