Brittany Higgins faces bankruptcy after a court ordered her to pay $315,000 in damages and legal fees over defamatory posts about Senator Linda Reynolds.
Brittany Higgins is facing bankruptcy proceedings after a 2024 defamation ruling awarded former senator Linda Reynolds $315,000 in damages and $26,109 in interest, along with an order for Higgins to pay 80% of Reynolds’ legal costs.
The Western Australian Supreme Court found Higgins’ social media posts defamatory, including claims that Reynolds mishandled a sexual assault allegation and engaged in hypocrisy.
Higgins is appealing the damages, cost order, and a finding she breached a 2021 settlement by calling herself a “defamation victim.” Reynolds filed a creditor’s petition in the Federal Court, citing non-compliance with a bankruptcy notice, and Higgins’ husband has also been served.
Higgins had previously offered $200,000 toward legal costs, which was rejected.
The case stems from a 2022 tweet accusing Reynolds of pressuring Higgins not to pursue a rape complaint against Bruce Lehrmann, a claim Lehrmann denies.
A separate Federal Court judge found the rape occurred on the balance of probabilities, a finding Lehrmann is appealing.
