Bangladesh jails 15 army officers in Dhaka after ICT warrants linked to 1971-era crimes.
Bangladesh has designated a building in Dhaka Cantonment as a temporary prison following the military’s detention of 15 serving army officers, including high-ranking officials, after arrest warrants were issued by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on October 8.
The warrants, linked to alleged crimes against humanity during former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s tenure, target 30 individuals, including Hasina and former top security officials.
The officers were taken into military custody without formal arrest and are expected to be held at the facility.
The interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus since August 2024, asserts authority over the legal process, with the ICT demanding court appearances by October 22.
The tribunal, originally established for 1971 war crimes, now oversees cases involving Hasina’s allies under an amended legal framework.
