Australia adds 17,500 student spots, favoring regional universities amid housing and fraud reforms.
In 2025, Australia’s government allocated 17,500 additional international student places, prioritizing regional universities like Charles Sturt, Federation University, the University of Newcastle, and Charles Darwin, which saw the largest proportional increases.
The University of Sydney, despite having the highest total intake at 11,900, was denied extra spots due to insufficient progress on student housing, while Monash, Melbourne, and UNSW received significant boosts.
The move aims to diversify student origins, reduce reliance on single markets, and support regional economies, with over 38,000 new housing beds in development.
The government also introduced new legislation to combat fraud in the sector, following a 26% drop in visa applications.
