Amazon fired Palestinian engineer Ahmed Shahrour after protests over its $1.2B Israel contract, citing Slack violations; he claims retaliation for activism.
Amazon has fired 29-year-old Palestinian software engineer Ahmed Shahrour after he participated in protests against the company’s $1.2 billion contract with Israel, known as Project Nimbus. Shahrour, who worked at Whole Foods in Seattle, was suspended in September following multiple non-work-related messages on corporate Slack channels criticizing Amazon’s ties to the Israeli government. He and six others occupied Microsoft’s Brad Smith’s office in August and distributed fliers at Amazon’s campus. Amazon cited violations of its conduct, communication, and acceptable use policies, stating the decision followed a formal investigation. Shahrour claimed the termination was retaliation for his activism, asserting Amazon is not neutral and suppresses Palestinian voices.
