UK travelers to Schengen now face fingerprint and photo checks at borders, with longer waits expected.
As of October 12, 2025, the EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) is active, requiring UK travelers to the Schengen Area to provide fingerprints and a photo at border checkpoints upon arrival.
The system, which replaces passport stamping, applies to all 29 Schengen countries but not to Ireland or Cyprus.
No pre-travel steps are needed, and the process is free.
Initially, only one border point per country uses the system, with full rollout expected by April 10, 2026.
EES kiosks are now operational at key UK departure points like Dover, Folkestone’s Eurotunnel, and St. Pancras.
Travelers should expect longer wait times, with experts advising up to four hours for processing.
The system aims to improve border security and track overstays.
