Scientists create sustainable way to turn rapeseed waste into human-edible protein.
Researchers at Heriot-Watt University have developed a method using eco-friendly solvents to extract high-quality protein from rapeseed press cake, a by-product of oil production.
The technique, which uses natural deep eutectic solvents and computer simulations, could help meet rising global protein demand expected by 2050.
Currently, much of the protein-rich waste is used for animal feed, but the new process may enable its use in human food.
While promising for sustainability and reducing food waste, further research is needed to optimize the method for large-scale application.
The findings were published in Food Hydrocolloids.
