Russia may attack a NATO member imminently, German intelligence warns, citing rising hybrid threats.
German intelligence chief Martin Jaeger warned on October 13, 2025, that Russia is preparing for a potential military attack on a NATO member and could act at any moment, rejecting earlier projections that a major conflict would not occur until 2029.
He cited a surge in hybrid threats, including 172 drone incursions in Germany from January to September, cyberattacks, espionage, and airspace violations, as evidence of Russia’s aggressive posture aimed at destabilizing Europe.
Jaeger stressed the need for proactive defense and warned that Russia’s actions are part of a broader strategy to intimidate NATO and undermine Western security.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz supported the assessment, attributing recent drone flights over German and Danish airspace to Russia.
